The New Chinese AI Landscape

•

If you have been watching my site, you will see I have reviewed the new tools from China, notably DeepSeek. I tried something interesting on DeepSeek today.

While I was in university, Chinese students gathered in a large area in Beijing called Tienamen Square. The gathering was to protest the lack of reforms expected by the government.

After six weeks of standoff, soldiers forcibly removed the protestors, killing an unknown number of protestors, anywhere from several hundred to a thousand.  I distinctly remember this event, as I was at university.  The image of tank man standing in front of Chinese tanks is forever etched in my mind.

Well, I asked the new DeepSeek about Tienamen. It turns out that for some reason, a Chinese AI doesn’t seem to know about this momentus event.

I then asked ChatGTP about Tianamen Square. Of course, I was given a comprehensive answer.
I wonder what controls are in place for the various AI tools to prevent censorship.
